5-Day Devotional: The Cost and Reward of Following Christ

Day 1: The Dividing Line of Discipleship

Reading: Matthew 10:34-39

Devotional: Jesus doesn't promise superficial peace that avoids all conflict. Instead, He offers true peace with God that may create temporary divisions in a broken world. When you surrendered to Christ, you chose a new allegiance that changed everything—your priorities, identity, and direction. This doesn't mean being harsh or difficult with others; rather, it means your loyalty to Christ exposes competing loyalties in those around you. Some will patiently seek to understand and eventually follow your example. Others will struggle and hold tighter to what you've released. Today, reflect on this: Are you living with total surrender, or are you trying to fit Jesus into your existing life? True discipleship requires letting Him take over completely.

Day 2: Sacrificial Allegiance Over Family Approval

Reading: Luke 14:25-33

Devotional: One of our deepest idols is the approval of others, especially family. Jesus radically challenged first-century Jewish culture where family loyalty was everything. He's not promoting hostility but demanding ultimate allegiance. The question isn't whether you love your family—of course you should—but whether you love Jesus more. This love is proven not just in emotion but in obedience and action. When serving Christ conflicts with family expectations, the choice must be clear: remain loyal to Christ, respectfully and honorably, but unwaveringly. Around the world today, believers face rejection and persecution from their own households for following Jesus. This isn't outside God's plan; it's part of the cost of discipleship. Where is your allegiance being tested today?

Day 3: Taking Up Your Cross Daily

Reading: Mark 8:34-38; Galatians 2:20

Devotional: In Jesus' day, the cross wasn't jewelry—it was an execution instrument. To take up your cross meant walking toward death, bearing public shame as the vilest criminal. Christ calls you to die to yourself: your plans, rights, comforts, and reputation. This is where nominal Christianity collapses. Following Jesus isn't casual association; it's total surrender that transforms everything—your career, hobbies, community service, speech, and even social media presence. Too often we forget our surrender to Christ in certain areas of life, treating them as Jesus-free zones. The gospel's greatest paradox is this: clinging to your life means losing everything, but surrendering fully to Jesus brings fuller life than you could ever create yourself. What area of your life remains un-surrendered today?

Day 4: Welcoming and Encouraging Fellow Disciples

Reading: Matthew 10:40-42; Romans 15:1-7

Devotional: The road with Christ is difficult and costly, which is why welcoming fellow believers is crucial. When someone surrenders to Christ, we should encourage, uplift, and help them walk. We hold them when weak, rejoice when they're strong, and carry burdens together. Why? Because this life with Christ isn't easy and often lacks earthly peace—we need each other. Every act of kindness toward those who trust Christ, even something as small as a cup of cold water, doesn't go unnoticed. God sees faithfulness others overlook; He sees your quiet obedience and rewards it. You need others to remind you when you're not being a good example of Christ, and they need you for the same. How are you actively welcoming and strengthening fellow believers in their costly journey of faith?

Day 5: From Brokenness to Mission

Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:14-21; Isaiah 61:1-3

Devotional: We're surrounded by brokenness—in ourselves, our nation, and our world. No amount of self-effort, relationships, or self-medication can fix sin's brokenness. Only sacrifice can address sin, which is why Christ came: to be the sacrifice we couldn't be for ourselves. When you trust Christ's death, burial, and resurrection, and surrender to Him as Lord, the way out of brokenness opens. He begins making you a new creation. Life won't necessarily be easy or peaceful going forward, but you'll have His peace. And here's the beautiful purpose: He transforms you to go back into the brokenness and show others the way out. Your life is designed to be a living testimony of freedom. Are you still living in brokenness, or are you showing people the way out? The mission continues through surrendered lives.
